USTUTT logoLBP is an institute of the University of Stuttgart. Its department "Life Cycle Engineering (LBPGaBi)" ( was founded in 1989 and works in the field of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The interdisciplinary team, consisting of scientists and engineers of various fields, is one of the largest LCA / LCE groups worldwide. Its services and research fields comprise:
Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) including:
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) (according to ISO 14040 & 14044),
- Life Cycle Costing (LCC),
- Life Cycle Working Environment (LCWE),
- Design for Environment (DfE),
- Design for Recycling (DfR).

LBP-GaBi is working in this field for over 25 years - carrying out hundreds of national and international projects for integrated environmental and economic decision support, LCA-methods and sustainability assessment. The specially developed professional LCE software system and database GaBi provides datasets for Life Cycle Assessment and sustainability evaluation in the field of energy systems, construction materials, commodities, automotive, electronics applications, renewable resources, materials industries, recycling and waste treatment. The software system GaBi and its databases are worldwide used in industry, academics and consultants in hundreds of licenses. It includes more than 110 impact categories, as well as, different evaluation methods. Also the integration of social criteria in its last version makes GaBi 6 the first ever full Life Cycle Sustainability software.
