The Institute for Acoustics and Building Physics is an Institute of the University of Stuttgart. Its department "Life Cycle Engineering (IABP-GaBi)" (https://www.iabp.uni-stuttgart.de/gabi/) was founded in 1989 and works in the fields of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The interdisciplinary team, consisting of scientists and engineers of various fields, is one of the largest LCA / LCE groups worldwide. Its services and research fields within the area of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) include:

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Life Cycle Costing (LCC)
  • Life Cycle Working Environment (LCWE)
  • Design for Environment (DfE)
  • Design for Recycling (DfR)
  • Sustainability indicators, assessment and strategies

IABP-GaBi has been active in this field for over 25 years, carrying out hundreds of national and international projects for integrated environmental and economic decision support, LCA-methods and sustainability assessment. The specially developed professional LCE software system and database GaBi provides datasets for Life Cycle Assessment and sustainability evaluation in the fields of energy systems, construction materials, commodities, automotive, electronic applications, renewable resources, material industries, recycling and waste treatment. The software system GaBi and its databases are used worldwide in industry, academics and consultants with hundreds of licenses. It includes more than 110 impact categories as well as different evaluation methods.

Role in the project

  • Provision of design specifications for the LCC analyses and LCA of the rehabilitation options
  • Development of a methodology for structural maintenance decisions that will take into account the structural condition of the bridge and external effects
  • LCC analyses and LCA of the available rehabilitation options and the software implementation of this methodology in the ‘Rehabilitation Planning’ Module (WP6)
